The recruitment for the Homi-Lung CAP study has officially started at two sites in Greece: the 4th Department of Internal Medicine at ATTIKON University General Hospital, led by Prof. Evangelos J. Giamarellos-Bourboulis, and the Intensive Care Unit at General Hospital of Voula ASKLEPIEIO, under the leadership of Dr Aikaterini Ioakeimidou. As of now, 14 patients have been screened and 13 of them have been successfully enrolled in the study.

The Homi-Lung CAP study investigates the progression of cardiovascular disease in survivors of community-acquired pneumonia and lung infection by SARS-CoV-2. The trial focuses on understanding the interplay between cardiovascular and respiratory systems, particularly how infections may contribute to long-term cardiovascular risks. This study will provide essential data for advancing treatment strategies and improving patient outcomes.

This significant milestone is closely linked to Work Package 2 (WP2) of the Homi-Lung project, which oversees prospective cohorts and bio-collections. Led by the Hellenic Institute for the Study of Sepsis (HISS) and coordinated by Prof. Evangelos J. Giamarellos-Bourboulis, WP2 is dedicated to managing clinical trials, finalizing protocols, and collecting biological samples to assess cardiovascular and respiratory disease progression.

The trial’s lead sponsor, HISS, has played a pivotal role in driving this effort forward. The dedication and expertise of our Greek partners continue to be instrumental in ensuring the success of this critical phase of the Homi-Lung project.
